How I Reversed My Periodontal (Gum) Disease Naturally

Picture it: I’m 22 years old, working my first real grown-up job after a fairly tumultuous entrance into adulthood. (I have insurance and everything!) So I go to the dentist, which is a grown-up thing to do that I hate doing, and she says I have to go see a specialist. I go to said specialist and he’s poking and prodding and it hurts so bad! Then he starts talking to me about surgery, skin grafts, how they’ll cut tissue from the roof of my mouth and then put it above my teeth, where the gum disease was causing my gums to recede… I left and never went back.

It was always in the back of my mind, this gum disease that was going to make my teeth fall out. I continued to watch my gums as years went by. They were always sensitive. They bled. I gave up flossing. I changed dentists. Eventually, I stopped going at all.

It’s been almost 20 years since that scary appointment and I want to tell you that every time I go to the dentist (every 6 months, thank you very much), my dentist tells me everything looks great. “Looks Great!” And I’m going to tell you how.

Picture

First, I sought out a holistic dentist. Don’t stop reading if you can’t find one! There is still hope! That’s what I did, though, and they were amazing. If you’re in the Virginia area, I can’t recommend Dr. Zunka enough. Gentle, kind, caring and non-invasive. A solid 90 minute drive each way, with 2 very small children, and I still went. You can’t put a price on your health!

Before they even cleaned teeth or talked too much about dental plans for the future, they focused on gum health. I knew my gums were in bad shape. After more than 10 years of ignoring the problem and 2 kids later (kids change your teeth!), I was prepared for the worst and my gums were the worst. They had a plan though. They didn’t make me feel like a terrible person for neglecting my oral health. And they never mentioned surgery!

The plan started with 2 necessary purchases (affiliate links included below); an oral mouth irrigator / water flosser and an electric toothbrush.

I have used these 2 companies and can recommend them as affordable options. You can find much more expensive options. Shop around, based on your needs. But do start with these purchases.

To the water flosser I added GSE (grapefruit seed extract):

I placed 2 drops of GSE in the container before filling it about half-way with warm water. It kills bacteria. And it did. Each time I returned to the dentist, they would take a sample of my bacteria under my gums and show me under a microscope. Watching it disappear was huge for my confidence in the program. I knew that what I was doing was working.

I returned to the dentist four times. Each time they did a quadrant of my mouth, for a total of four. Cleaning under the gums gently with a high-powered water-flosser like I had at home helped to clear everything out. This is the reason I think you could maybe take care of things on your own at home using these products! If you’re diligent and point that flosser with the narrowest attachment and at the highest power, underneath your gums with GSE, you may be able to destroy the bacteria that is causing your gum disease!!!!

I also brush(ed) twice daily with the electric toothbrush. The electric toothbrush stimulates the gums in a way that a manual, hand-held toothbrush never could.

I have since taken an extra step since this treatment and switched from toothpaste, which has ingredients you can’t even pronounce, let alone understand, to tooth powder!

Before you balk at it, think about it. Tooth powder lasts so much longer than toothpaste and has a handful of ingredients you not only can pronounce but can understand! You simply dip your wet toothbrush into the container of dry powder and brush. You still get a fresh-breath feeling and you can be assured that the ingredients in the tooth powder are not setting you back in any way.

If you’re struggling with gum disease, you need to be aware of everything from your toothpaste/powder ingredients to your diet because we all know by now that bacteria feeds on sugar. Keep it pure. Keep it clean. You’ll see results!

After a couple of months on GSE, I switched between clove, copaiba and thieves oils. I still switch between these three oils. I use only Young Living because they are the oils we have decided are most pure, based on extensive research. You can sign up with Young Living to obtain these oil using my Subscriber and Enroller ID 1414775. Contact me if you have ANY questions!

Which Young Living Essential Oil Products Contain Gluten?

Do Young Living Essential Oils contain gluten? Are Young Living Essential Oils gluten-free? Are Young Living Essential Oils safe for individuals with celiac disease? I know you want to know the answer to this. You know how I know? Because my original post on this subject is still, to this day, my most popular blog post. I receive e-mails and comments all the time, asking for information.

See original post here.

I am creating a new post because I received a more updated list and wanted to make it easier for you to access it, by creating a file for you to download directly from the blog. This way you don’t have to wait for me to check my e-mail, read your message, reply and attach the file. Honestly, this can take months. You deserve faster service than that!

There are MANY people that will tell you (and have told me), the amount of gluten in these Young Living products is very minimal and not worth getting upset about. To these people, I gently reply, for individuals with celiac disease or like me, who have an anaphylactic reaction to gluten, these minimal amounts are really dangerous. They also build up over time, gradually stimulating the immune system to have an immune response. For those who care, and there seem to be a lot of us, this information is really really really important!

Also, I get many people asking what oil to use if they can’t use the V6 carrier oil that Young Living sells. You can use olive oil in a pinch (I hear it stains, so be careful). Coconut oil will work whether in a liquid or solid state. We personally use Spectrum Organic Almond Oil and are very happy with it. I buy a large bottle and it lasts us years! Please see affiliate links to these products below and click on them to purchase if you’d like to support my blog in a very minimal way with no cost to you. (Thank you!)

Here is the note I received from a Young Living associate within the past year: We attached a list that shows which products contain wheat/gluten.  The list also indicates which products do not use any gluten containing ingredients; however, we cannot guarantee these products as gluten free. It is possible that these products are manufactured in facilities which use gluten in product formulations. Though there may be gluten processed in the same facility please rest assured that according to cGMP’s (current good manufacturing practices) the machinery is cleansed and sanitized between products to prevent contamination. If you have additional concerns about the use of any of these products we would encourage you to speak to your health care provider.

Tuesday’s Talk: About Gluten in Young Living Products

You know I love Young Living products and that their therapeutic grade essential oils are the only oils I use for myself and my family. (Read why, here!) I would be remiss, though, if I didn’t share the information I’ve acquired about the presence of gluten in several of the products Young Living offers. I’m not saying gluten makes these products ineffective. Surely, there are so many people with testimonials about the benefits of many Young Living products. This is not to devalue their experiences or yours, but to educate and inform for those, like me and my daughter, who cannot include gluten in any of our food, supplements or skin care products.

I originally signed up with Young Living to get their Tender Tush diaper rash cream for my youngest. It wasn’t much better than other creams, but essential oils mixed with coconut oil were definitely more effective. I didn’t think about it then, because honestly, it never crossed my mind that there could be gluten in a diaper rash cream. I know better now.

As I’ve been leading essential oils classes, I’ve included information about the Young Living supplements and skin care line. Because I want to provide as much real life information as possible, I started looking into some supplements to try myself so I could report back with results. My first purchase was going to be MultiGreens. I researched the ingredients and noticed Barley grass juice concentrate. My years of gluten research had alarm bells ringing in my head. I immediately wrote customer service. Here is their reply:

Hello Theresa,

Thank you for your email and for your patience in our reply to your inquiry. Multigreens are not Gluten free, I have also attached to this email a gluten content list.

If you have additional questions or concerns, or if we can assist you in any way, please feel free to contact us via telephone at 1-800-371-3515, fax at 866-203-5666, email at customerservice@youngliving.com, or our Live Help feature at www.youngliving.com.

If you are gluten intolerant, gluten sensitive, or allergic to gluten, like me, please read the following list carefully, to make sure you are not inadvertently putting gluten into your body and stimulating an immune response.

The essential oils themselves have NO gluten in them. However there are massage oils that do, as well as the V-6 oil used for capsules to swallow and diluting oils applied to the skin. The oils that contain gluten are:

Dragon Time Massage oil
Ortho Ease Massage oil
Ortho Sport Massage oil
Relaxation Massage oil
Sensation Massage oil
V-6 Enhanced vegetable oil
Cel-Lite Magic Massage oil
(The gluten in these products is in the form of wheat germ oil.)

The following are supplements that contain gluten, including what form of gluten it is:

Allerzyme (Barley Sprout Powder)
Balance Complete (Barley Grass Juice)
Ecuadorian Dark Chocolessence (Contains quinoa, which may contain gluten-like proteins)
Essentialzymes-4 (vendors have been unable to confirm gluten-free)
ICP (oat bran)
Juvapower (Barley Sprout Seed)
Juvaspice (Barley Sprout Seed)
Kidscent Mightyvites (Barley Grass)
Multigreens (Barley Grass Concentrate)
OmegaGize 3 (“none to our knowledge”)
True Source (Barley Grass)
Ultra Young + (“none to our knowledge”)

As I said before, the diaper rash cream came as a shock to me, but a LOT of Young Living personal care products contain gluten. They are listed below:

ART Creme Masque (Oat kernel extract)
ART Day Activator (Tocopheryl acetate is sourced from wheat germ)
ART Night Reconstructor (Tocopheryl acetate is sourced from wheat germ)
ART Renewal Serum (Oat Protein)
Bar Soaps (Oat kernel meal)
Boswellia Wrinkle Cream (Barley Extract – Hordeum Distichon)
Copaiba Vanilla Shampoo (“we cannot guarantee the reformulated hair care products as gluten free”)
Copaiba Vanilla Conditioner (“we cannot guarantee the reformulated hair care products as gluten free”)
Genesis Lotion (wheat germ oil)
Kidscent Bath & Shower Gel (wheat germ oil)
Kidscent Lotion (wheat germ oil)
Kidscent Shampoo (wheat germ oil)
Kidscent Tender Tush (wheat germ oil)
Lavender Foaming Hand Soap (Hordiam Distichon)
Lavender Lotion (Hordiam Distichon)
Lavender Mint Shampoo (“we cannot guarantee the reformulated hair care products as gluten free”)
Lavender Mint Conditioner (“we cannot guarantee the reformulated hair care products as gluten free”)
Lavender Volume Conditioner (wheat germ oil, hydrolized wheat protein)
Lavender Volume Shampoo (wheat germ oil)
Orange Blossom Face Wash (Hydrolized wheat protein)
Prenolone + Body Cream (wheat germ oil + hydrolized wheat protein)
Protec (wheat germ oil)
Regenolone Moisturizing Cream (wheat germ oil, hydrolized wheat protein)
Rose Ointment (wheat germ oil)
Sandalwood Moisture Cream (wheat germ oil, hydrolized wheat protein)
Satin Facial Scrub (hydrolized wheat protein, hydrolized wheat starch, barley extract, Hordiam Distichon)
Sensation Lotion (wheat germ oil)
Wolfberry Eye Cream (hydrolized wheat germ oil, hydrolized wheat starch, barley extract, Hordiam Distichon)

Thieves products are beloved by many and thankfully there aren’t a lot that contain gluten. However, it should be noted that the Foaming Hand Soap contains Tocopheryl acetate from wheat germ oil. I plan on making my own foaming hand soap when my September order of Theives arrives. Keep looking for that post!

The Animal Scent Ointment also contains wheat germ oil.

FAQ

Can you have a copy of this chart and e-mail?
Most certainly! Use the Contact Me” box on the homepage and I will get it right over to you.

Do I feel differently about Young Living now?
I’m a little disappointed, but if I’ve learned anything from this process, it is ASK! Always ask. Don’t assume that because a company has high standards and superb products, that they’re allergen free.

Am I frustrated by the use of gluten in Young Living products?
Yes, I am. I feel like I won’t get to try some of these products that people have experienced great results with. That said, thankfully their oils are gluten free and that’s what really matters.

Should Young Living change their product formulations?
I wish! I wish Young Living would recognize that we are a society overburdened with gluten and that so many people are sensitive and allergic. I wish they’d consider that and produce a reformulation that included products without gluten. I also wish I knew how to get that ball rolling…

Should we avoid these products?
You should avoid the products mentioned above if you are sensitive to gluten. Even rubbing products containing gluten on your skin can cause an immune reaction and we wouldn’t want that! I won’t ever get to try the MultiGreens, but perhaps I’ll find a blend I like for myself elsewhere and supplement with additional oils, separately.

Is Young Living still the best company for oils?
I say yes. I say this is the only company that follows their oils from the very seed planted in the ground to the harvesting of the plant, from the rendering of the oil to the seal on the bottle. I think for me, the disappointment and “a-ha” moment came when I realized that just because they make awesome, pure, therapeutic grade oils, does not mean that they are a supplement company or can produce a product for personal care better than I could at home. It’s so easy to fall in love with a company and surrender to them, believing they are the only company for you, without double-checking the things you would anywhere else…
That being said, my supplements will continue to come from Designs for Health and Apex Energetics, because these companies are GMP (Good Manufacturing Processes) Certified and I know every ingredient that goes into their products. Also, they never include gluten or dairy, corn or soy in their products, and I personally, need that validation.

Remember, for oils, Young Living is the only way to go, in my opinion. For other products, I may recommend heading elsewhere…

A New Mop for Non-Toxic Floor Cleaning

Remember that post I did on non-toxic floor cleaner? You can see it here: Non-Toxic Floor Cleaner. I still love this cleaner, but I wasn’t thrilled with the method. It worked when I had the house empty and I could pick everything up and mop and let it dry. It worked great. However, when there’s one messy floor or a spill or a sticky spot, it became wasteful to make a bucket of cleaner, only to have to clean one area. I put it in a spray bottle too, as a good friend suggested and it is one of my favorite cleaners for all surfaces, but mopping was not simple.

Then I heard about this mop in a mom’s group and I went to check it out. While it’s $31 on Target.com, it was on sale for $18 at Target. I hear the sale is over but it’s still only $19.99 now. I wanted to use it a few times before posting about it and now that I’m sure I love it, I’m sharing it with you. It is the Rubbermaid Reveal Microfiber Spray Mop System. The one on-line comes with extra microfiber pads, whereas the one in the store only has one pad. They’re washable and the bottle can be filled with the cleaner of your choice. If you want the $19.99 version and don’t have a Target near you or you want to order online, like I prefer, check out Amazon:

I’ve now used this mop more times than I can count and I only purchased it a week ago! I have quickly mopped the dining room, the bathroom, the kitchen floor or a hallway whenever I had a minute and didn’t have to wait til the kids were sleeping or the house was empty. I fill it with ¼ peroxide, 10 drops of tea tree oil and the rest water and it’s ready for me whenever I need it. I just thought you should know, in case, like me, you can only get around to mopping once a week just because there’s not enough time. This mop makes it easy!

I have no affiliation with Target or Rubbermaid. I only want to share with you because I love it! I do have an affiliate account with Amazon, and purchasing through the Amazon link above will contribute to this website (and cost you nothing extra!).

Holistic Remedies for the Common Cold

It’s so much easier to think and read about cold remedies when you’re not sick. At least it is for me! When I’m sick, I can’t even read, let alone make some fancy concoction. This is the predicament I found myself in last week when my baby girls and myself were laid out flat with really bad colds.

Oh a cold is a cold is a cold and it’s stuffy noses and coughs, right? Well, yes, but sometimes it’s debilitating. The headache, alternating runny and stuffy nose, cough and sore throat really put me down! When it hit me (Day 1), I was kind of in shock and I just sat there, guzzling water and wiping all three of our noses. On Day 2, I was feeling worse and had to be a little more proactive, taking 6,000 IU of vitamin D3 in the morning, 2,000 mg of vitamin C every few hours and 1 Tbsp of liquid silver every four hours. I continued to drink hot lemon water with honey whenever I had the energy to make it. It all seemed to take too much effort. When I woke up still feeling horrible on Day 3, I was desperate enough to raid my arsenal. I continued with vitamin C and silver, while adding garlic tea (see below) and raw chopped garlic to my food. Drinking water, juice and tea all the while, I gradually felt myself improving. By Day 4, I was out of the house, moving around and getting things done. Day 5 found me walking in a 5k with my girlfriends, thankful for my health.

So, what did I learn from this? I need to have my remedies ready to go. I need to be more prepared for the onslaught of exhaustion that might very well prevent me from creating some healing concoctions. I need to ask for help. On Day 3, when I was in tears because I had another 11-hour day ahead of me watching my sick babies and taking care of myself, I asked my husband to chop and peel garlic before he left for work. What a help! It made all the difference, having someone give me access to the things I needed to help myself.

Interested in garlic tea? I learned to make this when I was pregnant and was nervous about what I could and couldn’t take for a cold. It’s very simple. Peel and cut 5-6 cloves of garlic. Pour boiling water over them (preferably in a one-quart mason jar) and cover (I use a pot holder). Let steep for about 30 minutes and drink up. Sometimes I add lemon and honey. Sometimes instead of water I use broth. I also reuse the garlic one or two more times, by refilling the jar with hot water.

I whole-heartedly attribute my quick turn-around to silver and garlic. However, there are some more things I could’ve done and want to be prepared to try in the future. I read this amazing article on Holistic Squid’s blog that gave me some great ideas! You can read the whole article here. I am going to invest in fermented cod liver oil and oil of oregano. I may also get some elderberry syrup. I’m inspired by the posts on Holistic Squid’s website and hope you’ll check them out too!

Just an aside, I can get you any of these supplements as a practitioner who works with Designs for Health. I am very particular about which supplements I recommend because the quality of supplements is not regulated; therefore you don’t always get what you’re paying for. Buying from a company that sells only to practitioners (like Designs for Health) or purchasing supplements and vitamins that are labeled GMP (Good Manufacturing Processes) is your best bet for getting the high quality necessary to make a difference.

Homemade Mosquito Repellant

Homemade non-toxic mosquito repellant: 3 ingredients!
Our move to Virginia came with lots of surprises, one of which I wasn’t prepared for: bugs. More importantly, bug bites. I can’t even express how much I despise mosquito bites. I swell and itch and scratch and itch and scratch… you get the point. We came here when I was pregnant during the summer and I dreaded leaving the house out of fear that a bug bite would further enhance my pregnancy-induced insomnia. You shouldn’t have to live in fear of bug bites! This is my third summer here and I’m getting used to it (as much as you can get used to it).

I’m always trying new bug sprays while refusing to use the majority of over-the-counter mosquito repellants because of their ingredients. I now have little babies to think about too. It is becoming common knowledge that the substances we put on our skin enter into our bloodstream. You can read more about that here, if you’re interested. So, I ask myself often, if I wouldn’t eat it, should I put it on my body? Or on my babies’ bodies?

Now I arrive at the reason for this post: my favorite, effective, good-smelling, non-toxic, homemade, 3-ingredient mosquito repellant! There is no sticky or oily residue and you don’t stink afterwards. It does require re-application and it may clog some spray bottles, but these are minor issues to me when my skin and my children’s skin is protected (without the use of chemicals).

Mosquito repellant without the chemicals
Ingredients:
2 tsp vanilla extract (no sugar added, not imitation)
1 tsp orange oil (essential oil)
8 oz water

Directions:
Mix these together thoroughly and pour into a spray bottle (or several). Shake before use. Spray a lot, everywhere, frequently. I base these measurements off of an e-how article I read and I’ve made it twice, both times with good results.

Here are some tips to get you started concocting your own non-toxic homemade bug spray:

  • Buy organic vanilla extract. I purchased a 4 oz bottle made by Simply Organic. The good news? There’s always a $1 off coupon available on their website!
  • Use a high-quality essential oil. I used Wyndmere because that’s what I could find in the store (here it is listed on Amazon, if you can’t find it). Higher quality essential oils can be purchased through an authorized seller of Young Living Essential Oils (which I am). Check out their website and see the difference! If you’re interested in purchasing this oil or other oils, just contact me!
  • As for the spray bottle, I tried a standard spray bottle that you would get in the cleaning aisle and it lasted about a day before it clogged. I have since purchased trial size spray bottles at Target for $0.97 each. Even with daily use only one has clogged!

Usually, I hate spraying bug spray and use it sparingly, but not with this stuff. Let me know what you think!

EDITED 8/6/14:
I still love this bug spray but I’ve learned a few things. No plastic bottles! Invest in glass when using essential oils. This spray didn’t remain effective in a clear, plastic bottle because light was able to get to it. Buy small, dark glass bottles (I found some at a local health food store for less than $3). I also know now that I will not put any other essential oils on mine or my family’s bodies unless the oils are Young Living Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils. Other oils are not guaranteed or even created for anything other than aromatherapy. They are not safe for skin application and can actually be unhealthy when applied. Lesson learned!

Non-Toxic Floor Cleaner

A year ago we moved into our first real home and most of it has tile and laminate flooring, which led me to search out convenient, non-toxic ways to clean it. Not the easiest task, actually! I was tempted by the Swiffers, which look to be so easy but there are chemicals in the wet (disposable) cloths and there’s a lot of waste involved, so I didn’t choose that option.

I found a mop at Bed Bath & Beyond that has a microfiber washable cloth and decided this would be my vehicle for cleaning all these floors. The next decision was to find a recipe for a cleaning solution. I started using a hot water, vinegar, baking soda, dish soap and tea tree oil solution. It was effective but it left spots and sometimes a film from the baking soda. My search continued.

This is my new non-toxic floor cleaner: peroxide, hot water and tea tree oil. Less ingredients to remember, super cheap and really cleansing! I loosely followed this recipe and combined:

¼ cup of peroxide

3 drops of tea tree oil (therapeutic grade melaleuca alternifolia)

3 drops of Thieves (therapeutic grade)

8 cups of hot water

I’m very happy with the results! I still have to battle the little people footprints and often employ the daddy-take-the-children-while-I-mop method, but such is life! Let me know if you try it, if you like and it what you think of using peroxide.

Non-toxic floor cleaner: 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide, 3 drops tea tree oil and 8 cups hot water

EDIT 7/1/2014: I have learned the importance of buying Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils. I recommend, in order to get the health and cleaning benefits of Tea Tree Oil, to purchase Melaleuca Alternifolia directly from Young Living. You can sign up here and use Sponsor ID / Enroller ID: 1414775. They also sell Thieves oil, which has been included in this edited version of the cleaning recipe.
